Culture of Interest: Mexican Americans
The Mexican American culture functions as a predominantly collectivistic one. Its primary values center around family over the individual, high levels of religiosity, strong interpersonal relationships, an extensive ethnic identity, aggression, and a gender dynamic which defines identity and human development, as wells as socialization norms. These factors fascinate me, as a Catholic born and raised in Texas, there are some unique cultural aspects which I personally identify with in unexpected areas. Considering my past social groups, history of exposure to Mexican Americans, and personal interest in the culture, it seemed a logical choice for comparison in a cross-cultural research context. With the changing sociopolitical climes in the Southwest region of the United States, as an individual training in cross-cultural research, where to best begin but a culture with which I am already familiar.
